Researchers from Washington University in St. Louis found that the sugar trehalose (a carbohydrate from the group Sevostyanova disaccharides) has a beneficial effect on the human body, the findings of scientists posted MedicalXpress.
Trehalose, according to the study, has a healing effect on the liver, and increases insulin sensitivity, which in turn reduces the risk of developing diabetes.
Experiments conducted on mice have demonstrated that the addition of trehalose in the drinking water causes activation of the gene ALOXE3 in the test organisms. It turned out that this disaccharide also inhibits glucose entry into the liver that leads to glucose uptake from the blood and decrease its concentration in the body.
This allows the human body to process insulin and to reduce insulin resistance (impaired metabolic response to insulin), which is the development of diabetes of the 2nd type.
In addition, the researchers found that the disaccharide is causing accelerated burning of calories, thus increasing body temperature, decreasing the deposition of fat in the liver and cholesterol levels in the blood and preventing the increase in overall body weight.

Thus, trehalose acts as anti-diabetic medicines — thiazolidinediones, which improve insulin response.
Because of the violation of glucose absorption and growing as a result of absolute or relative insufficiency of insulin may develop a dangerous disease — diabetes, which is characterized by hyperglycemia — persistent increase of glucose in the blood. The disease is characterized by a chronic course and a violation of all types of metabolism: carbohydrate, fat, protein, mineral and water-salt. This disease affects, in addition to people, as well as some animals, such as cats and dogs.
