Why Makeup Artist Emily Cheng Swears by This $5 Pencil for Budge-Proof Brows

When compiling a list of the best brow products you can find at the drugstore, makeup artist Emily Cheng (who I interviewed for the piece) asked me if ColourPop counted. Unfortunately, you can't pick up the Instagram-famous cosmetic company's palettes and highlighters at the same time as your prescriptions just yet, so I had to leave it off the list. But Yara Shahidi's go-to makeup artist, known for her sharp wing skills and the ability to make skin glow, went on to suggest the ColourPop Precision Brow Pencil as her affordable pick for amping up arches, and I couldn't keep that information to myself. Ringing up at $5, Cheng's ColourPop pick is cheaper than many popular drugstore brow products.

One of the biggest reasons why Cheng keeps the Precision Brow Pencil in her kit is its texture. It's neither too soft nor too waxy. Instead, she calls it a "firmer pencil". Combined with the pencil's teeny-tiny tip, "I'm able to create hair-like strokes to fill in sparse areas," Cheng explains. If the pencil was too soft, she says the lines would come out too thick or would smudge easily. However, the firmer pencil ensures that the filling-in process is foolproof and all your work stays put.

Having a long-lasting brow pencil is key for Cheng. "My brows can get a bit oily, so by the end of the day, any color usually wears off," she says. "But since I've switched over to the Precision Brow Pencil, I have brows all day long." With that in mind, those with oily skin should take note.

Chen also appreciates the spoolie brush attached to the other end of the Precision Brow Pencil. "I find that the spoolie portion of brow pencils often break off, but ColourPop's is actually removable," she explains. "I have yet to break one."

If you have a hard time finding the right shade brow pencil, the Precision Brow Pencil most likely has the right option for you. Of its eight hues available, Cheng uses the ones called Black n' Brown (a deep brown) and Bangin' Brunette (a true chocolate brown). For redheads, you don't have to resort to this lip-liner hack anymore because there are even two shades made specifically for you: Red Head (a warm red-toned brown) and Arched Auburn (a lighter red-toned brown).

You can shop the ColourPop Precision Brow Pencil now for $5 on colourpop.com to see what the hype is about. Honestly, if it's good enough for Emily Cheng, it's good enough for me.
