Check out the Japanese section of Forest Glade at Mount Macedon (816 Mount Macedon Road, Mount Macedon; open daily 10am to last entry 4:30pm; forestgladegardens.com.au), and the "non-touristy" (according to Joachim) 11-hectare Pirianda Gardens (Hacketts Road, Olinda; open daily 10am-4pm June-September, and 10am-5pm Oct-May; visitdandenongranges.com.au).
Closer to the city, Livesley suggests one just east of Box Hill, off Middleborough Road at the end of Gardiners Creek – a beautiful linear park of native trees, and the Burnley Botanic Gardens, or the old railway line from Glenferrie to Kew which is now the long L.E. Bray Park.
Victorian redwood forests include the Aire Valley Redwood Forest, Beech Forest. Planted in 1936, they're now part of the Great Otway National Park. The trees are more than 60 metres tall.
East Warburton's Redwood Forest stands tall by a treefern-clad section of the Yarra River. There's also a small gathering of redwoods from circa 1923 in Warburton itself, behind the Redwood Community Centre on Warburton Highway.
