Picking Up This Habit During Marriage Increases Your Risk for Divorce

Porn is one of those things that’s no biggie to some people and a BFD to others. But new research shows that, among married people, it seems to fall into that second category.

The info comes courtesy of a study from the University of Oklahoma that found that people who started watching porn while married were more likely to get divorced than those who steered clear of the stuff after getting hitched.

For the study, researchers analysed the nationally representative General Social Survey panel data, which is collected from thousands of American adults. Men and women were interviewed every two years on three separate occasions about their porn use and marital status.

Overall, picking up a porn habit doubled participants’ risk of divorce. But the effect was even more pronounced among women, whose risk for divorce actually tripled—going from 6 percent to 18 percent—if they started watching steamy flicks. (Interestingly, quitting porn lowered that divorce risk down to 6 percent again.)

Apparently age matters, too: The younger you are, the more likely your marriage is to be negatively impacted by porn. But if you’re religious, porn doesn’t seem to have any potential impact. (Blessed?)

Bizarrely, people who said they were “very happy” in their marriage and then started watching porn had a four-fold increase in their likelihood of getting divorced within two years. Researchers think it’s because their private screenings might have been discovered unexpectedly—making their spouse more likely to totally rethink things.

Of course, it’s worth pointing out that suddenly getting familiar with Jenna Jameson and friends doesn’t necessarily mean that your relationship is doomed. The study shows a link between porn and increased divorced rates—but doesn’t prove that porn caused those splits. In fact, sometimes, watching porn together can make your sex life even hotter.

That said, if you’re thinking of getting into porn, maybe make sure your partner is well aware of it. Who knows, they may even be interested in watching with you.
