Daily aspirin healthy retirees will do more harm than good. These are the results of a study involving more than 20,000 older people.
Observations showed that if aspirin take on a regular basis relatively healthy retirees, it does not provide any pronounced protective effect in thinning the blood, but increases the risk of bleeding. In all countries, General practitioners recommend aspirin for everyone to pensioners, not even suffering from heart disease. However, the fashion for self (without consulting the doctor) taking a daily aspirin is gaining momentum. There is a strong opinion that aspirin saves lives, as it is an anticoagulant, thinning the blood and thereby reduce the risk of blood clots that can clog blood vessels. It is because of these blood clots occur most dangerous heart attacks and strokes.
But researchers from Monash University in Australia found that tens and hundreds of thousands of healthy people taking aspirin to prevent, face the risk of dangerous internal bleeding. Only among people who already suffered from cardiovascular diseases like the victims of heart attacks and strokes, aspirin is justified, as in this case, the benefits of the medication outweigh its harm. These are the results of observations that lasted approximately 5 years.
Of all people on aspirin arbitrarily attracted to these observations, 90,3% were still alive at the end of the study, not suffering from any marked disabilities or senile dementia. In the group of those who took a placebo, this number amounted to 90,5%. In addition, in the group on aspirin was observed a slightly higher mortality compared to the group on placebo of 5.9% versus 5.2%. (READ MORE)
