Sarah Hyland Just Showed A Close-Up Of Her Kidney Transplant Scar On Instagram

  • Sarah Hyland shared a photo on Instagram showing her kidney transplant scar across her stomach.
  • Sarah, 28, has had two kidney transplants and 16 different surgeries.
  • Sarah generally avoids baring her stomach as a result of her multiple scars.

Sarah Hyland has been an open book about her health struggles and personal life—and showing off her scars is no exception.

Sarah, 28, shared an Instagram photo Thursday afternoon of a mirror selfie of her midsection. “Hey @theellenshow,” she wrote in the caption, “I know you’re besties with Jen but does she wear your underwear outside of her jeans like me?” Sarah also added the hashtag “#showyourscars” to the end of her post.

While, yes, she was clearly directing everyone’s attention to her cute undies, complete with images of a heart-eyed Ellen Degeneres, her bare stomach revealed something way more impressive: her kidney transplant scars.

A little background: Sarah was born with a condition called kidney dysplasia in which the kidneys, or parts of the kidneys, don’t fully form in the womb, according to the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK). As a result, she’s had 16 surgeries throughout her lifetime, including two kidney transplants—one from her father in 2012, and the other from her brother in 2017 because her body rejected the first.

The actress generally avoids showing her stomach, and even wore two pairs of Spanx to to camouflage it for an Oscars party. Sarah has mentioned in interviews how hard it is for her to have this area of her body on display (she’s even compared them to the Jersey turnpike before).

Lately though, she’s shared a handful of itty-bitty bikini photos from a bachelorette party (looking very confident, might I add.) “A woman’s body is a miraculous thing and we can do anything we set our minds to,” she captioned one throwback shot.

I’m putting this #tbt out there to remind myself that I can make it to the gym. Lately I’ve been making excuses because of the constant pain from health issues. But no more. A woman’s body is a miraculous thing and we can do anything we set our minds to. #summer #bodygoals here I come.

I’m definitely here for Sarah continuing to share what her body’s been through—#showyourscars is right, girl.
