Patrick Starrr Says It's OK to Still Be a Makeup Maximalist in 2020

Understandably, 2020 has brought on a huge wave of makeup minimalists. In tough times — mostly spent inside and on the internet — full-coverage foundations have been traded for tinted moisturizers. Elaborate contour routines have made way for multi-use sticks and creams. Falsies seem like a thing of the past altogether. Patrick Starrr wants to bring those things back. For him, they never left in the first place.

With his cosmetics brand One/Size, the influencer is reinvigorating makeup maximalism with his latest launch, the Ultimate Collection, which consists of a setting powder, a powder puff for application, and a duo of false eyelashes. "I think this idea of minimalism has become a trend in beauty, but there are also people that are maximalists like myself that want the fantasy of glamour," Starrr tells Allure over Zoom. "We're here to cater to those that aspire to be different."

Starrr's long-lasting love of baking (the makeup kind, not the food kind) made the creation of his Ultimate Blurring Setting Powder a no-brainer. "If you just see my history on my YouTube channel, I would take a setting powder, then a foundation powder, then a bronzer, and then a blurring powder — and then there was the era of the HD translucent powders," he recalls.

To remedy his own time-consuming process, he wanted to create a finely-milled powder that could combine all the abilities of the other powders, which he's confident he's done, thanks to a rigorous testing process wherein the powder had to last 14 hours on Starrr's skin — not an easy task, as he puts it. “As a man in makeup, my anatomy is set up a little bit differently: I have facial hair, I have a beard, I have texture, I have pores — my skin eats makeup,” he explains. “So I pushed the testing for my oily, textured skin.”

The application method of a setting powder, of course, is just as important as the powder formula itself. And that's why Starrr created the Ultimate Setting & Baking Puff to go alongside his new powder. Unlike the teardrop-shaped makeup sponges his followers are likely accustomed to, this lightweight puff is round and soft like cotton. It beckons images of old-Hollywood stars primping for their big scenes.

The difference between his powder puff and similar iterations of the past, however, is that it has one flattened edge created just for baking. "I designed this cushiony, comfortable, straight edge to curve my cheeks and to give me more of a snatched, flawless look [or] for my eyes or contouring the nose," he explains.

Even if you aren't the type to bake or go full-glam with your base makeup, Starrr wants you to know that these products are not intended to exclude you. If you want more of a low-key routine, he recommends using the puff to apply smaller amounts of powder with pressing and gliding motions instead of baking. "Those [motions] are really important in terms of securing your makeup and securing the blur."

If you are a high-glamour queen or king, though, you'll definitely want to dive right into the collection's third offering: Full-On Faux Lashes. They come in two different styles, Come Thru and I've Arrived, both of which are just as long and voluminous as you'd expect from Starrr. These puppies can last for up to 15 uses — if you clean and store them correctly, which shouldn't take too much effort, according to the experts.

Makeup artist Meghan Nguy previously explained to Allure that you should first use a pair of tweezers to pick excess glue off your lashes before busting out the makeup remover: “If you've applied a little mascara to your lashes while you had your false lashes on, I like to use a clean spooley dipped in micellar water and slowly comb the lashes out," she says. After that, just dry them off by patting them with a paper towel and place them back in the case they came in.

No matter what you choose to do with One/Size's new offerings, Starrr just hopes it makes you feel good — because we can all use a little more of that these days. "Because of the time that we live in, just getting glam and shifting your mindset… can help your day in terms of your perspective," he says. "[You can] be something else, more than just your pajamas and your house slippers."
