What Each Color Means in Modern Witchcraft — and How to Make it Work for You

Are you curious about how witches harness the power of colors in their magickal practices? Well, do you have a favorite red lipstick that you swear by for first dates? That's color magick with the goal of seduction. Have you ever laid in the grass on a summer day just absorbing the sun’s rays and enjoying how good it makes you feel? You were utilizing the magickal properties of yellow and gold.

As a witch myself, what I find so appealing about color magick is that we use it every day, often without even noticing the ritual. It's something that's incorporated in the fabric of our lives, just by virtue of making many small choices throughout the day. In fact, you’re probably already practicing more witchcraft than you think.

What is color magick?

"Color magick is using the color spectrum and the intention of each color to invoke its magical response," says witch and art advisor Sarah Potter. To experiment with color magick, you can place items of different colors around your home to help create different energies. If you’re on a budget and want to try it out without spending a lot of money, Potter suggests trying placing flowers around your home to see how they change the mood. Who knew home decor could be witchcraft? Personally, I most often use color magick when working with candles. For instance, I choose green candles for money drawing spells and pink for conjuring up some self-love.

However, my favorite way to use color magick is in my beauty routine (witchy makeup addicts, rejoice). Of course, we all have favorite colors that work best with our style and skin tone, but don’t be afraid to experiment with glamour magick. For instance, opt for a blue manicure if you’re over-stressed and need some peace, or if you’re in the mood to seduce, go for a glamorous red manicure. Keep reading to learn the magickal properties associated with each color along with a tip on how to incorporate it into your life.

The Meanings of Each Color

While each color has general properties that most witches agree on, keep in mind that the most important aspect of any spell is you, and we all relate to colors in different ways. That being said, feel free to experiment until you find what works best for you. This is just a general guide with some suggestions that I find helpful in my own color magick practice.

Yellow

Associated with abundance and joy, yellow is the shade I work with when I’m feeling down, dealing with depression, or just need a burst of sunlight in my life. "Yellow is an injection of happiness," Potter says. From ancient nature-based religions to modern day patriarchal practices, the sun is literally a source of life.

Witch tip: Stick your head out your window for some extra rays or go for a walk around the block on a sunny day if you’ve been at your desk all day and are feeling meh.

Orange

Orange is akin to yellow and is wonderful for help in creative endeavors, Potter says. "I recommend orange when someone has writer’s block," Potter says. I associate orange with David Bowie-as-Ziggy Stardust’s hair, AKA a confident and creative genius. It's always good to have orange energy on your side.

Witch tip: Keep a bowl of oranges out on a table at home, and mindfully peel and eat one if you’re working on a project and find yourself stuck. One of the fastest ways to literally add color magick to your life is to consume a color through food, Potter says.

Red

Passion is often associated with the color red, and for good reason. It's often used in love and seduction magick and is wonderful to add to your life if your sex life has been a bit lackluster, you want to attract a new lover, or simply want to feel like a sex god. If you’re in a long-term relationship, lighting red candles or sprinkling red roses over a bed promises a night of passion. It's true — there’s a reason red roses are a cliché.

Witch tip: Wear a sexy red outfit for your next date and remind yourself that you’re the baddest witch in the room and your lover is lucky to have you.

Pink

Pink is also a color of love, but it’s softer and gentler than red and great for self-care. "When you need to be kind to yourself, use pink," Potter says. You can also use pink to nurture relationships. Perhaps you and your partner have crazy hot sex and passion isn’t a problem, but you could use some help empathizing and understanding one another. Pink is incredibly healing, especially in matters of love.

Witch tip: Carve your name and zodiac sign into a pink candle using a tooth pink, anoint it with your favorite essential oil, and then burn the candle for as a self-love spell. Bonus points if you line them around your tub and take a luxurious bath.

Purple

Work with purple to get in touch with your intuition. Purple is also wonderful for adding oomph to creative projects and is associated with royalty.

Witch tip: Take a break from your project to blast some Prince and dance around like the queen you are. When you're done dancing, you'll know what to do.

Blue

Like a calm day at the beach, blue is a color of peace and protection. Potter also says that blue can be used for matters of communication and clarity. "To make sure that you are communicating your ideas fully and truly use blue," she says.

Witch tip: Keep a painting of water, a blue bowl filled with seashells, or blue sea glass on an entry-way table to welcome peace into your home.

Green

Green is the color of Earth, growth, and therefore also of earthly possessions. Hell yes, it's also the color of cash, and that's no coincidence. Likening the color green to a walk through the woods, Potter says, "It’s also the color of fertility or starting a new business."

Witch tip: Paint your nails green during a time in which you could use some extra cash flow.

Black

Some witches warn of using black in magick, such as lighting black candles, as there is an association between “dark magick" and the color. I personally disagree. To begin, many modern-day magickal practices stem from African traditions and it’s racist and uneducated to conflate "black magick" with the color. Yes, some witches will use a black candle as part of a hex, but in my opinion, if you’re a well-informed witch, that’s your business. The color black in and of itself isn't bad — it’s actually most often associated with protection, uncrossing, and can be used to ward off any negative vibes that may be thrown your way.

Witch tip: Wear black tourmaline for protection.

White

White is useful in magick, as it can act as a stand-in for any other color. It’s essentially a blank slate. If I wanted a red seduction candle, but only had white, I’d just toss some red glitter on the white candle to achieve the same effects. It's cleansing and purifying, so it's great for clearing away old energies and bringing in fresh, new, happy ones.

Witch tip: Meditate while visualize a sparkling white orb around you to act as a protective shield.
