Czech scientists from the National Institute of mental health. studied information about more than 20 thousand people from 16 European countries and was able to find that cognitive health in old age negatively affects life below the poverty line in childhood. The results of the research published the journal Neurology.
“People whose childhood was poor in old age is worse than remember the words and was not so rich vocabulary,” – said the authors of the project in the journal.
Scientists reviewed data 20 244 man age (average) 71. Within two years these people were periodically invited for testing, allows to assess cognitive decline in elderly participants. By the beginning of the experiment none of the subjects was not neurodegenerative diseases.
Specialists carried out tests on vocabulary and memory. Also considered side variables – the level of education, body mass index, consumption of alcohol and tobacco, the nature of the work, having a partner, depression.
The results of the experiment were as follows. A group of people, whose childhood was spent in poverty, showed not only a lower level of education, but also the worst results for passed cognitive tests. Adverse living conditions in childhood can have serious consequences for intelligence in the future, although not affect the rate of cognitive decline, said the authors of the research project.
