Eva Mendes & Ryan Gosling Are Having Some Trouble Raising Bilingual Daughters

Raising bilingual children is a fantastic move, but it ain’t always easy, as Ghost Rider‘s Eva Mendes revealed recently on The Talk. The usually private actor spoke about her family life on May 20, confessing that her daughters Amada, 2, and Esmeralda, 4 — whom Mendes shares with fellow actor Ryan Gosling — speak only a mix of English and Spanish: Spanglish.

“I’m Cuban… so yeah, we’re trying to teach the kids Spanish, and it’s harder than I thought. Because I speak Spanglish and that’s what they’re picking up,” Mendes said during her time on The Talk. “So it’s adorable but it’s technically not a language. It’s Spanglish.”

Mendes continued, “So our little girl will be like, ‘Mommy, you know, my, my boca [mouth] hurts because I think something got stuck in my diente [tooth].’ It’s so cute, but I’m like, ooh, that is not really gonna go great out there.”

This was a rare and delightful glimpse into the very private world of Mendes and Gosling and their girls — and The Talk hosts were definitely eating it up. One pressed Mendes, “There was a time when you said you weren’t sure you even wanted to have kids. So what changed?”

Mendes’s response was swift and certain: “Ryan Gosling.” Swoon.

The host continued, “Like was there a moment you laid your eyes on him and you thought, ‘I want kids,’ or it took a minute—?”

“No, no, it took a minute,” Mendes laughed.

In 2016 Mendes spoke with Vanity Fair about trying to immerse her daughters in her Cuban culture. “We’re constantly playing Cuban music. I speak to them in Spanish, and my mom speaks to Esmeralda in Spanish. Well, now she speaks to both of them in Spanish,” Mendes told the outlet. “Any time I have an opportunity to introduce her or them… to my culture, whether it’s through music, or through food, I do.”

We admit it: We hope Mendes (and Gosling) continue to share bits and pieces of their life together as a Cuban-Canadian-Hollywood family, though we promise to keep our expectations down and honor their privacy. On an unrelated note, can we just say we love that Mendes used Amada’s artwork on her t-shirt line for New York & Company? With proceeds going to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital? Yup, we’re officially crushing on both Gosling and Mendes now. Hey girl hey.
