Are you a choleric, phlegmatic, sanguine or melancholic? This classification of personality types was proposed in ancient times – it was invented by Hippocrates. And we use it until now. So is it time to introduce a new classification? The more suggestions already.
Who is who?
But first let us remind you the main characteristics of the representatives of the “classical” scheme:
- phlegmatic is a person who is calm and even somewhat slow
- melancholic – kind of a pessimistic, fearful and prone to sadness
- sanguine is a lively, cheerful, restless, “the soul of the company”
- choleric – hot impulsive and explosive
It is believed that man’s whole life is one type of personality. But actually we are changing and are changing quite. Including our character is often determined by others. So is it time to introduce a new classification of personality types?
A new look at an old problem
Scientists from northwestern University (USA) suggested his typology, based on the severity of the five traits: openness, perception, awareness (conscientiousness), extraversion, getting on with everyone (kindness) and neuroticism (emotional instability).
To identify the personality type survey was conducted in a total of 1.5 million respondents. And in the end scientists have got 16 types of personality, which eventually was reduced to four.
New classification of personality types as follows:
- “The usual”. It’s people emotionally moving and not very open. This type more often are women than men.
- “Discreet”. People of this type is emotionally stable, not particularly open, although friendly towards others.
- “Role model”: all qualities that are included in the “big five”, these people on top, in addition to neuroticism. And people can easily go in this group with age, gaining experience. Among the “role models” more women than men.
- “Looped on itself”: such people possess very low transparency, livable and consciousness.
Why change the classification?
And that gives us new classification of personality types? First and foremost, the hope that of the same type, you can switch to another. For example, is known for his obsession with ourselves teenagers do not remain so forever. Many of them move into the category of “normal”, and even become a “role model”.
Moreover, the authors of the new classification say that any one type is not better than the other. Neither personality type is also not “pathological”, it’s just that they have certain traits. And, by the way, to guide: switching from group to group is always possible.
And by the way, whatever personality type we may belong, we all share a feeling of pity (some of us just hide it). About how robots have learned to press on pity and to manipulate people, read our article.
