The journal JAMA Oncology has published the results of a new study conducted by researchers from several medical centers in the US. This work shows: excess weight in women at a young age significantly increases the likelihood of cancer.
The scientists stated: the higher a woman’s BMI (body mass index), the greater her risk of colon cancer. Obese young women, according to experts, a dangerous disease can manifest itself before the age of 50 years, which is very early for this type of cancer.
In total, the researchers had analyzed data on more than 85 thousand women gathered in the period from 1989 to 2011. By the beginning of this investigation, the age of women surveyed ranged from 25 to 44 years. Every two years specialists recorded all changes in the health status of the participants. During the project, 114 women before the onset of the 50th anniversary was discovered colorectal cancer.
Scientists have established that the risk of this disease is closely associated with BMI.
“In women with a BMI above 30, the risk of early colorectal cancer is doubled – and even those who do not have family history of the disease and has no genetic predisposition,” reported the authors.
