Mental disorders and physical illness often go hand in hand, but for the first time psychologists have traced their relationship with the young people. It turned out that arthritis and diseases of the digestive system are more common after the depression, followed by anxiety disorder skin diseases and epilepsy associated with eating disorders.

Psychologists from the University of Basel (Switzerland) traced mental disorders in children and young people influence the development of physical illnesses. To do this they had to analyze data from a representative sample of 6,500 adolescents aged 13-18 years.
The scientists noted that some physical diseases are more common in children and teenagers, if they previously suffered from certain mental disorders. This rule works in the opposite direction: some mental disorders occur more frequently after the occurrence of certain physical diseases.
Emotional disorders (e.g. depression) often follow arthritis and diseases of the digestive system. The same ratio exists between anxiety disorders and skin diseases (e.g. acne or seborrhea). A close relationship was first discovered between epilepsy and subsequent eating disorders (anorexia, bulimia, compulsive overeating).

We first established that the epilepsy is accompanied by increased risk of developing eating disorders. Therefore, the correct approach to its treatment may have potential in the context of therapy due to psychogenic behavioral syndromes associated with disorders in food intake, govoritsia Tegethoff, lead author of the study.
The study is published in the scientific journal PLOS ONE. They provide important information about causal relationships between mental disorders and physical diseases.
