Coronavirus symptoms: Two major stomach issues signalling a possible COVID-19 infection

Coronavirus latest updated figures shows 51,608 cases of infections with 5,373 deaths from COVID-19. This comes as news was announced last night that UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson has been admitted to ICU for his persistent symptoms, including a dry cough. COVID-19 has two major symptoms which we are all hyper-vigilant of: a temperature or fever and a dry, continuous cough. As the pandemic rages on, however, and doctors become more finely attuned to the myriad ways that the disease can manifest, so less obvious symptoms emerge. Feeling any of these two symptoms in your stomach could signal a possible infection.

Dr Asif Munaf, Locum Medical Consultant said: “The less obvious symptoms are what we call ‘atypical symptoms’ but they are more common than we originally thought.

“I have seen these symptoms in patients first-hand. They can either indicate the start of the illness or can be the primary symptom of the infection.

“We’ve heard of the loss of taste and smell being reported a lot but there are others.”

If a person feels either pain in the abdomen or is experiencing diarrhoea it’s imperative, they carefully monitor themselves and if a fever or cough develops too, they need to be extra cautious.

Scientists from Tongji Medical College looked at data from patients to analyse the different symptoms COVID-19 patients experienced.

The results from the research indicated digestive symptoms were prevalent with 117 patients.

Additionally, 58 percent reported having diarrhoea and 20 percent of them having diarrhoea as the first warning symptom of an infection.

Alongside diarrhoea, a pain in the abdomen has also come up as a potential warning symptom of COVID-19.

A bad stomach might be more commonly associated with bugs such as the norovirus.

However, some patients have reported pain in the abdomen before developing the other more commonly known symptoms.

This pain can include abdominal pains including stomach cramps or a dull ache in the tummy.

Director for Public Health for Worcester, Michael Hirsh said: “The pain in the stomach is a result of a patient developing pneumonia in the lower lobes of the lungs.

“If the lobes are inflamed frequently, the irritation in the diaphragm causes pain in the abdomen.

“The more we see the disease, we’re going to see manifestations of the disease that don’t fit that classic picture of dry hacking cough and fever. We’re going to see other manifestations of it.”

Mr Hirsch added that the city’s hospitals were seeing far more patients who have tested positive for the deadly virus also displaying symptoms of only pain in the abdomen.

It’s important to note that pain in the abdomen and diarrhoea could be caused by a myriad of other health conditions and does not necessarily signal a possible COVID-19 infection.

Monitor your stomach issues and if other symptoms emerge take the necessary precautions.
