Why not blame yourself for excess weight

Numerous studies and everyday observations show that people with obesity are often victims of condemnation, they are called lazy and unattractive, accused of lack of will power and self-esteem. But the public censure no one benefits: it can drive a person into depression and worsen health problems. Now scientists have discovered another dangerous aspect of the cult of slenderness: a negative attitude to your body may increase the risk of developing metabolic syndrome.

Associated diseases:

ObesityDepressionStroke DiabetesAtherosclerosis Myocardial infarction The metabolic

A study led by Rebecca Perl, associate Professor of psychology at the Center for weight and eating disorders at the University of Pennsylvania. The results published in the journal Obesity.

The study included 159 adults aged 21 to 65 years with body mass index (BMI) of 33 or higher (classified as obese). They are all filled voprosnik identify signs of depression and metabolic syndrome.

Metabolic syndrome is a cluster of risk factors that increase the likelihood of stroke, diabetes, cardiovascular disease and other health problems. These factors include high blood pressure, large waist circumference, high levels of fasting blood sugar and low levels of good cholesterol high density lipoproteins.

In total the criteria of the metabolic syndrome was consistent with 51 people (32%). Compared with participants without condemning yourself for the extra weight, people with a negative attitude to their body are at greater risk of developing dangerous symptoms.Patients with a high level of self-deprecation in 6 times more often had elevated levels of triglycerides, which leads to the development of atherosclerosis, increases the risk of stroke and myocardial infarction.

Self judgment can lead people into a state of physiological arousal, cotroneo on its own increases the risk of metabolic disorders through biological processes (e.g., secretion of cortisol, a stress hormone). Affective tension, therefore, provokes a person eat junk food or to overeat.

Associated symptoms:

Weight gain Hyperglycemia (increased blood sugar) High blood pressure (hypertension, hypertensive disease) High cholesterol

The findings of scientists once again are pushing the society to abandon the stereotypes that censure is able to improve the lifestyle of people with overweight or obesity. Writes about this in detail psychologist Tracy Mann in the book secrets of a lab supply: Discrimination on the basis of weight does not encourage overweight people to exercise. Instead, they begin to be ashamed to go to gym and do exercise on humans. When in one of the research scientists with great care raised the issue of censure of people with overweight, women reported that they were not ready to train and their commitment to physical activity began to decline.
