What foods can help with migraines?
In some cases it may even be due to food intolerances. Your immune system has to “fight” with these components and it produces substances that cause headache.
It is estimated that from 20 to 40% of all migraines are largely caused by malnutrition. The researchers found that the diet has a greater impact on migraine attacks in children than in adults. This is due to the diet – children often eat sweets, peanut butter, pizza or hot dogs than adults.
The main products, which largely contribute to the emergence of migraine are chocolate, cheese, citrus, fast food and alcohol.
•Substances that may affect migraine sufferers
Experts have identified a group of compounds formed from the food in the biochemical processes of metabolism that are directly related to the high sensitivity of the organism suffering from migraine. One of these groups of compounds are amines are derivatives of nitrogen from protein components. Amines are always present in the human body, regardless of the type of diet.
Source of dopamine are, for example, peanuts, peas, beans and soybeans. Tyramine is mainly formed during the ripening process of foods such as yellow cheese, yoghurt, buttermilk, starter culture, dried, or canned meat or fish. A rich source of histamine are cold-water fish such as salmon and tuna. Phenylethylamine is mainly present in chocolate. Octopamine and synephrine are found in large amounts in citrus fruits. And tomatoes and pineapples are a source of tryptamine.
In addition, vasoactive substances, vapors that affect vasoconstriction or narrowing of blood vessels of the brain are also considered to be dietary factors that trigger migraines – they can increase the frequency of migraine attacks in people who are particularly sensitive to these compounds. Other substances which adversely affect the health of migraine sufferers are alcohol and caffeine, as well as enhancers and preservatives added by food manufacturers. Among others, monolatry glutamate, called flavor, aspartame, artificial sweeteners, sulfites, which give the product the correct color in addition, the phenols naturally present in tea, coffee and some fruits, as well as in large-scale food dyes.
The researchers make different hypotheses about how the substances in the diet affect migraines. According to one theory, it is caused by a deficiency of certain enzymes that other people are in the right quantity. Other scholars reject this hypothesis, suggesting another: the influence of active substances on contraction and relaxation of the blood vessels.
However, most experts agree that sensitivity to certain foods that lead to migraine, not related to food allergies.
