Steam inhalation is an effective way to relieve the symptoms of rhinitis. But scientists have discovered that they will not help to cope with chronic nasal congestion. According to researchers from the University of Southampton (UK), it is best in such cases to do a nasal wash with saline.
The cause of chronic nasal congestion often lanovetskiy sinus, Allergy, polyps or sinusitis. This symptom annoys patients almost stronger than the others, vyzvannye headaches and even blurred vision.
Steam inhalation and nasal rinses are the most popular ways to cure a cold. But whether they are effective for relieving chronic nasal congestion? Here’s what we found out scientists from the University of Southampton.

Nasal lavage can reduce the need for antibiotics
The study involved 871 patients diagnosed with sinusitis (inflammation of the mucous membrane of the sinuses). Participants were divided into 4 groups, assigning them the following procedures: daily steam inhalation, nasal lavage, nasal lavage inhalation, usual care.
After 6 months of observation, doctors found no improvement in patients, carrying out steam inhalation. People who daily washed the nose with saline, was more fortunate: the symptoms of chronic nasal congestion began to retreat after 3 months, decreased headaches, and resort to drugs had less.
The researchers came to the conclusion that a nasal wash can not only effectively remove the constant nasal congestion, but also reduce the need for antibiotics.
The threat of global antibiotic resistance is real, and we must seek alternative methods for the treatment of people who used to use antibacterial drugs unless absolutely necessary, says Dr. Paul little, the head of research.
