While most parents spend their weekend tirelessly chasing after their children, Ashton Kutcher spent this past weekend running alongside his. The award-winning actor, his daughter Wyatt, 8, and his son Dimitri, 5, ran a 5K in Los Angeles after months of preparation. Because when their dad finished the New York City marathon in Nov. 22, the kiddos decided they wanted to race too.
“They want to run a 5K and today [Kutcher] started training our kids to run,” wife Mila Kunis told People soon after the marathon. “They did a half-mile run today. It’s very cute.”
The That ’70s Show star has been running with his kids since that first half-mile in the fall, and their many days of training paid off on Saturday when the trio crossed the finish line in 43 minutes. That’s about 10 minutes per mile, which is no small feat for little legs!
Though her family spent day after day lacing up, Kunis had no problem not joining her little joggers. And we don’t blame her! Running solo is hard, and teaching your kids to safely do so can’t be a walk (or run) in the park. Plus, she must have been thrilled to have some coveted “me time” while her husband and kids were at the track.
“I can lie and be like, ‘Absolutely!’,” the actress said. “But I’m not [going to train with them].”
No matter what acting jobs come Kutcher’s way, he prioritizes having the time to be with his two young athletes whether they are on the race course or otherwise. When he was offered the leading role in Your Place or Mine with Reese Witherspoon, Kutcher decided he would only take it if he could work in Los Angeles.
Shooting was set to take place in Georgia (there’s a nice tax break in The Peach State), but Kutcher didn’t want to miss out on his kids’ school year or give up his job as “den leader” for Dimitri’s Cub Scout pack. And so he negotiated with Netflix, letting them take the extra cost of shooting in L.A. out of his salary.
“He loves his family so deeply and really is such an incredible dad who shows up every day for his kids,” Witherspoon told Esquire. “There is no pretense. He is just very comfortable in his own skin. And did I mention he is hysterically funny?”
