GMB: Professor Susan Hopkins asked about symptoms of Covid
It’s crucial to stay informed about the latest COVID-19 developments when considering whether to travel, according to Matthew Nelson.
Covid hotspots have been identified across the UK, as the number of Covid infections and hospital admissions have been increasing week-on-week.
Nelson affirmed that “travelling within the UK is generally considered safe at this time”.
However, it’s still necessary to “take precautions” for your well-being and that of others.
Nelson recommended keeping up-to-date on current Covid case rates in the specific regions you intend to visit.

“You should also follow preventive measures to guard against COVID-19,” said Nelson.
He cited “avoiding close contact with individuals who are displaying symptoms”, and “maintaining good hand hygiene practices”.
For those travelling within the UK, the car may be the safest route in terms of catching Covid.
Nelson explained: “As the more private and enclosed space, cars can help to reduce the risk of catching COVID-19.

“When travelling by car, you have better control over your immediate environment and interactions.
“Car travel allows you to minimise your exposure to others, as you can typically travel with only your immediate household members.”
Nelson added: “Prior to your trip, you should ensure that your vehicle is clean and disinfected, paying special attention to high-touch surfaces like door handles, steering wheel, and buttons or screens on the dashboard.”
What about travelling abroad?
As for travelling abroad, it totally depends on the Covid situation in the country you intend to visit.
“If you do decide to travel abroad, it is important to take precautions to protect yourself and others from COVID-19,” said Nelson.
Suggestions include wearing a mask, vaccination against the virus, and careful planning.
“It’s essential to stay vigilant, adapt to changing circumstances, and prioritise safety,” said Nelson.
