Taking paracetamol causes asthma in children

Treatment of kids Calphalon or other drugs based on acetaminophen more than doubles risk of development of asthma later in life. To such conclusion came researchers from the University of Melbourne.

Scientists argue that the widely used drug absorbs an enzyme that is critical to clean the lungs of toxins. A study involving 620 children have shown a link between kids who received regular paracetamol, and subsequent risk of development of asthma at the age of 18 years. It also demonstrated that children with particularly severe variant of the gene glutathione S-transferase(GST) has the risk of asthma, 1.8 times higher if they receive regular paracetamol.

In the West, the paracetamol is a very popular medication for children, which is sold under the brand name calpol. Many doctors recommend it to treat a variety of disorders, including headaches, ear and stomach pain, and high temperature. The GST genes contain instructions for the production of enzymes, which utilize the antioxidant glutathione to counteract the effect of toxins in the body and in the lungs. This mechanism helps to prevent cell damage and reduce inflammation.

The study showed that paracetamol absorbs glutathione and reduces the body’s ability to fight with accumulations of toxins. In Russia with asthma was facing approximately every 11th child, and several thousand people die each year from this disease. For their study, Australian scientists have attracted children even before birth, as determined by the risk of asthma in unborn child for the presence of asthma in his family. (READ MORE)
