A resident of Venezuela Katrina Parra was completely paralyzed, has lost even the ability to move his tongue after oral contraceptive caused gradual stopping of all functions of her body. It all started with abdominal pain, which were followed by alarming attacks of almost incessant vomiting. After some time, the disease has made Katrina so weak that she developed sepsis, which for two months she spent in the ICU. Only 8 months after the onset of the disease, the girl was given the correct diagnosis – a genetic disorder called acute intermittent porphyria. The disease weakens the immune system, but the immediate reason it started was oral contraceptive. After the girl refused the pills, she was able gradually to recover their health and return to work fitness instructor.

Acute intermittent porphyria is an inherited condition which is caused by a mutation in the gene that produces heme, the component that carries oxygen in red blood cells. By itself, mutation does not trigger the disease. Must be other factors, including the use of certain medications or changes in diet. The disease affects one person in every 10 thousand, but the severity of its symptoms varies. Most people with a hereditary gene and does not occur these symptoms ever. But if they appear, can be a pain in the abdomen, nausea and vomiting, constipation, pain in the back and limbs, muscle weakness, inability to urinate, palpation of the heart, confusion, hallucinations, and seizures.
