National conference on tuberculosis in Ukraine

In Kiev 09-10 Oct 2018 hosted the first national conference to Mobilize community efforts in the fight against TB in Ukraine.

The event was organized by TB People of Ukraine, the purpose of which is to overcome the TB epidemic in the country.

BO TB PEOPLE of UKRAINE unites the people, who suffered from tuberculosis and passed thorny path to recovery, and all who are not indifferent to the problem of tuberculosis in Ukraine.The organization covers the whole territory of Ukraine and the international TV community.

Treatment of tuberculosis is very serious and long-lasting. According to statistics, every year 6,000 patients with tuberculosis do not reach this way to the end. Unfortunately, the reason for that resource scarcity associated with the misallocation of Finance. In 2017, in Ukraine there were 121 27 cases of tuberculosis, which is 63,9 patients on 100 thousand population.Leaders are Odessa (107,8 patients with tuberculosis on 100 thousand population), Kherson (73,0) and Kirovohrad (70,3) region.

Despite the high level of spending on TB treatment (the average cost of a day of hospitalization is $ 32 U.S., and only 10% of this amount focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of disease) in Ukraine one of the lowest rates of treatment success in the Eastern Europe and Central Asia. 71% among new cases and 34% among patients with drug-resistant TB.
75% of tuberculosis cases able-bodied people age 18 to 54 years, while the age group 25-44 years accounted for 50.1% of patients.

How was it?

The event brought together representatives of the community of TB patients, NGOs, international donors, public health Center of Ministry of health of Ukraine, the parliamentary platform of tuberculosis, physicians. Guests of the conference congratulated Ulyana Suprun.

The conference considered the outcome of high-level meetings at the UN General Assembly devoted to the fight against tuberculosis. Discussed the best world practices for the treatment of tuberculosis, situation of infection control in Ukraine, the reform of TB services in Ukraine, the implementation of patient-centric models of TB treatment, new drugs and the potential for their use in the country.

Representatives of non-governmental organizations from the regions have shared the best experience of budget advocacy, the practices of psycho-social support of TB patients, procured at the expense of local budgets.

Much attention was paid to financing of TB control programmes and implementation of the transition plan of actions on transition from donor support to the budget.

This conference is the best proof that the partners join forces in the fight against tuberculosis. For too long the interests of the patients had been neglected, but we have laid the Foundation, and then the story is not coming back. Overcoming barriers, we are already opening new horizons. The high-level meeting in the UN General Assembly signed the Declaration. But the signing of the Declaration the first step. Whether the fight is effective, depends on the future consolidated efforts of all stakeholders like patient community and the state,Olga Klimenko, the Chairman of the Board BO TBpeopleUkraine.

Natalia stutter (Stop TB together) told me that tendollar invested in the fight against tuberculosis, returned in the amount of $ 43. Unfortunately, in many countries where donors, the sustainability of the services remains in question. By itself, the ambulatory treatment of tuberculosis is inadequate, a comprehensive approach is needed: social support and material assistance.
