Breast implant led to the contamination with Salmonella

34-year-old woman from Nebraska picked up Salmonella with… the breast implant. It happened once during her vacation at the Mexican resort developed diarrhea.

A woman from the U.S. state of Nebraska, whose name was not called, became infected with Salmonella because of their breast implant. Doctors say that the reason for this was the so-called travellers ‘ diarrhoea (disorder of the gastrointestinal tract have newly arrived in a different climate zone individuals, in particular tourists), which was developed at the American while on vacation in Mexico. Talking about this case in the journal JPRAS Open, surgeons from the medical center at the University of Nebraska revealed that 34-year-old patient previously passed through a breast augmentation and lifting. 5 months later she went to the Mexican Cancun, where she developed abdominal pain, diarrhea and fever. It was here that she was diagnosed with travelers diarrhea.

Back in the States the woman went to doctors with complaints of swelling and pain in the right breast. Ultrasound showed fluid accumulation at the implant, which found signs of a bacterial culture of Salmonella. The doctors in the article say that a gastrointestinal disorder, which the woman had contracted in Mexico, entered her bloodstream, which led to infection of the implant.

However, a famous plastic surgeon from Beverly hills Dr Stuart Linder expressed strong skepticism about this explanation. According to him, the particles of the Salmonella got into the implant during the very first plastic surgery and for a long time remained dormant. The surgeon believes that the probability of penetration of bacteria from the stomach through the bloodstream to the area of the implant is much smaller. (READ MORE)
