Acupuncture is a form of alternative medicine and a key component of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) in which thin needles are inserted into the body. Acupuncture is a pseudoscience, the theories and practices of TCM are not based on scientific knowledge, however, many people swear by it and there is some evidence it could treat a range of conditions.

Acupuncture is an ancient Chinese medicine-based approach to treating a variety of conditions by triggering specific points on the skin with needles.

It is a minimally invasive method to stimulate nerve-rich areas of the skin surface in order to influence tissues, gland, organs, and various functions of the body.

Traditional Chinese medicine practitioners believe the human body has more than 2,000 acupuncture points connected by pathways or meridians.

These pathways create an energy flow through the body that is responsible for overall health.

Disruption of the energy flow can cause disease, TCM practitioners believe.

By applying acupuncture to certain points, it is thought to improve the flow of Qi, thereby improving health.

Studies have shown that acupuncture is effective for a variety of conditions.

Conditions which could be repaired from acupuncture include:

Allergies

Anxiety and depression

Osteoporosis

Chronic pain, often in the neck, back, knees, and head

Hypertension

Insomnia

Menstrual cramps

Migraines

Morning sickness

Sprains

Strokes

Acupuncture points are believed to stimulate the central nervous system, said John Hopkins Medicine.

The site continued: “This, in turn, releases chemicals into the muscles, spinal cord, and brain.

“These biochemical changes may stimulate the body’s natural healing abilities and promote physical and emotional well-being.

“National Institutes of Health (NIH) studies have shown that acupuncture is an effective treatment alone or in combination with conventional therapies.”

Risks

According to the Mayo Clinic, common side effects include soreness and minor bleeding or bruising where the needles were inserted.

The health site added: “Single-use, disposable needles are now the practice standard, so the risk of infection is minimal.

“Not everyone is a good candidate for acupuncture. You may be at risk of complications if you:

Have a bleeding disorder

Have a pacemaker

Are pregnant.”
