The welding smoke is bad for the brain

Russian scientists of the far Eastern Federal University (FEFU) with the support of an international group of toxicologists found in welding fume harmful nanoparticles, able to penetrate into the body of welders and reach the organs of the nervous system, particularly the brain. The results of a study published in the journal Scientific Reports.

In the arc welding process produces smoke that contains microparticles of iron oxide, manganese, silicon and chromium. Scientists said that these particles can be very harmful to health.

Especially dangerous, according to toxicologists, the most fine particles contained in welding fume, nanoparticles as small as 1 nm. These substances can enter the body of welders and get into the brain, explained by experts.

“Chemical compounds of smoke generated in the welding process of the parts and penetrates the human body through the respiratory system, is toxic, because they contain in themselves the products of oxidation of metals. Toxic nanoparticles are not deposited for a long time and can travel far beyond the working area”, – noted the researchers.
Scientists say that currently there is no uniform criteria parameters welding: clearly nowhere stated amperage and welding methods. According to researchers, these parameters can be particularly important because it has an impact on the welding vapor and the release of smoke noxious solid nanoparticles. Experts stressed that the safety of the welding work must take account of the factor influence smoke of welding on the nervous system, and its provisions must be revised to reflect this fact.
