The Nobel prize in physiology or medicine this year was awarded for the discovery of the mechanism and the creation of new drugs for cancer therapy to stimulate the immune system to fight tumors. Immunotherapy can indeed be effective in the treatment of cancer – scientists found a way to implement it and has made a real revolution in Oncology.
According to the Russian scientist, oncologist Nikolai Zhukov, science has long been well known that malignant tumors may “trick” the immune system. But what allowed them to disguise themselves so that the immune system did not notice the growing tumors, the experts did not know.
Scientists, who this year was awarded the Nobel prize in medicine and physiology this year, was able to open the mechanism to “Wake up” anti-tumor immunity. Developed by researchers at the new drugs are artificial proteins – antibodies. They affect molecules that inhibit the immune response and do not allow the immune system to recognize tumors.
“These drugs was virtually impossible – for people with diseases, leading inevitably to death, the chance for long-term control of the tumor, in some cases a full recovery”, – said Nikolai Zhukov in an interview with RIA Novosti.
He added that the new drugs have proved effective and was officially used in the world, with 14 types of tumors. At the same time, you need to understand that immunotherapy does not help everyone because not all patients can get the immune system to “turn on” and begin to attack the tumor. Zhukov said that “ten and even sixty percent of patients depending on diagnosis, it is possible to achieve long-term effect.”
