Canadian scientists at the brain Institute at the University of Western Ontario announced the preliminary results of a major study, which has helped experts to determine the ideal duration of sleep. The most dangerous for the brain was recognized as sleep duration of less than four hours.

The researchers stated: for the brain any harmful deviation from the norm – both towards increase, and towards reduction of sleep duration. During the project they observed a variety of sleep habits in people around the world – in total, were considered indicators of more than 40 thousand people. As a result, specialists have concluded that people with a 7-8 hour sleep duration have better cognitive abilities compared to others. While scientists have considered additional factors such as place of residence, education level, medications, age and other.

The authors found that the dream of greater or lesser duration is bad for the brain functions. People whose sleep was much shorter than indicated 7-8 hours, or, on the contrary, longer, decrease in mental abilities. The most dangerous was the sleep duration of less than four hours – this dream gave the effect of the aged brain.

“Daily sleep duration of less than four hours caused people crashing their cognitive abilities began to match the level of the patients nine years older,” said the authors of the project.
