Artificial pancreas approved to treat diabetes

Management on sanitary inspection behind quality of foodstuff and medicines of the USA approved the use of artificial pancreas for diabetes type 1 diabetes. Now insulin-dependent patients will be able to control the level of sugar in the blood with the help of the device MiniMed 670G.

Insulin pumps are used for the treatment of diabetes mellitus type long. Sensors, measuring sugar level in the blood, is also hardly new. But the artificial pancreas MiniMed 670G is the first device that combines these functions and allows the glucose sensor to communicate with a pump, automatically adjusting the flow of insulin.

The device consists of two functional parts: the miniature sensor with a short needle is connected to the skin and monitors blood sugar levels. Using the adhesive backing it is held on the skin and won’t slip.

The second part of the artificial pancreas pump with a catheter that delivers insulin. The device quickly determines the blood glucose level and injects the required dose of insulin.

According to the manufacturer, MiniMed 670G will save patients from having to constantly monitor the level of insulin and to do daily injections, giving them more free and carefree life. The only disadvantage of the high cost of the device (up to 8 thousand dollars) and the need to annually change the sensor.
