Here’s Why These $530 Sneakers Are Getting Dragged by People on Social Media

Italian shoe brand Golden Goose is being called out on social media for selling a pair of $530 sneakers that feature “crumply, hold-it-all-together tape.”

Yes, you read that right. This company is selling shoes that are, apparently, only kept from falling apart thanks to expertly-placed, perfectly distressed tape — for hundreds of dollars. Needless to say, responses on social media have been, well, less than enthusiastic. Many are accusing Golden Goose of glorifying poverty while still attempting to turn a significant profit. One person tweeted that “there are people in the world wearing plastic bags as shoes because they can’t afford any but these HIDEOUS things are selling for $500,” while another described the whole fiasco as “peak capitalism.”

Twitter user @broookedanielle explained that kids at school used to get “made fun of endlessly” for having shoes that were taped together because they were falling apart.

Some joked that if people are really willing to spend more than $500 on these “distressed” sneakers, they could offer them a deal on a similar pair of shoes.

Golden Goose isn't the only brand to come under fire for having high-priced clothing like this. Luxury label Balenciaga has created everything from a $9,000 “layered oversized parka” to an $895 airbrushed “New York City” hoodie to a $2,000 skirt inspired by a…car mat.
